Notary fees
We quote in writing before your appointment, once we have seen the documents.
How we charge
Notarial fees in Victoria are not regulated. Each notary sets their own, and the Society of Notaries of Victoria publishes a benchmark scale for reference. We look at your documents first and send a written quote before you book, so you know the cost before the appointment.
What affects the fee
- the type of notarial act: witnessing a signature, taking a declaration or affidavit, certifying copies, or a certificate such as a certificate of good standing;
- how many people are signing and how many documents or pages are involved;
- whether the overseas body needs a particular form or wording, or a certificate in English and Polish;
- whether you would like us to lodge the documents with DFAT.
Your quote sets out everything we will do.
Other costs
- DFAT: $105 for each apostille or authentication, increased with the CPI on 1 January each year.
- Embassy legalisation, for countries outside the Apostille Convention, at the embassy’s own fee.
- Translations, if the receiving body asks for one.
Why a JP is free and a notary is not
Justices of the peace in Victoria are volunteers. It is also an offence for anyone authorised to take affidavits to charge for doing so, except a public notary taking an affidavit for a document intended solely for use outside Australia. If your document is for use in Australia, see notary or JP?
